Description:
Undated Image shows Roacklands, built in the 1880s on the Newton Park Estate and the residence of Francis Martineu Lupton Esq. Born in Potternewton on 21st July 1848, Lupton came from an old and respected Leeds Family with a strong sense of citizenship. His career included the chair of an improvement committee responsbile for clearing the insanitary areas of York Street and Quarry Hill. All three of Lupton's sons were killed in World War I, and in 1917 he gave up Rocklands letting it for the nominal annual rent of £1, for use as a home for the children of soldiers and sailors. He moved to Fieldhead, Park Avenue, Roundhay where he died aged 73, succeeded by two daughters.
