I lived next door to John Speed in Garforth .I had been in Canada a couple of years when I heard of his murder. It was a great shock and we really felt for Judith and the 2 kids. Gun crime was very rare when I lived in the UK. Now it,s common.Such a shame.

John Speed was one of the shift patrol sergeants at Millgarth Police Station in 1984. I was posted there the year before (after my initial training). As a 'rookie' copper, I was on the 'night shift' on 30th October, and finished work at 6am on the 31st. John was shot at just before 8:30am that morning after responding to a '10/13' call (officer requires urgent assistance!) from PC John Thorpe who had already been shot by David Gricewith. Sgt Speed arrived and was confronted by Gricewith who shot the sergeant at point-blank-range! PC John Raj, who had also responded to the 10/13 call, subsequently chased Gricewith on foot. Gricewith loosed off at least two rounds at John Raj (fortunately missing him) before commandeering a workman's van at gunpoint. John Speed died at the scene. John Thorpe recovered from his injuries, but was 'retired' on medical grounds. John Raj always played down his own involvement that day, but he was truly very brave to pursue an armed murderer (as an unarmed officer), knowing what Gricewith had just done! Gricewith died two years later, by his own hand. The sawn-off-shotgun he was using to commit an armed robbery in Cleveland, accidentally went off and he shot himself in the stomach!

I remember John Speed from the days when my parent's Una and Eric had the Bridgefield pub at Eastend Park in Leeds. He and his colleagues were wonderful people and we held quite a few private police parties organized by the Milgarth Station police staff. I was living in South Africa at the time I heard about John's death, via my mother. I and my mother were deeply saddened. The memorial, will keep John Speed in the hearts of the Yorkshire people.

Went by here on Friday the 30th and someone had laid a vase'y type object and a flower of some sort, probably to do with the 31st anniversary of his pointless murder. Where did the Millgarth memorial go to?

My father Jack Furness recently passed away and when passing this memorial had told my brother that John was part of our family. Whether he was a distant cousin or what part he never said. I would be interested in finding out a bit more about how I am related to him.
