Aerial View, Leeds University
Description:
c.1960 Leeds University, on Woodhouse Lane. In the left corner at the junction with University Road is Emmanuel Church, the University Chaplaincy. The old Yorkshire College buildings can be seen on the right side of University Road. Woodhouse Cemetery is behind the University, after clearance it was called St George's Field. Land has been cleared along Woodhouse Lane to the junction with Clarendon Road in preparation for the building of the Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering buildings. These were built between 1960 and 1963. In the top right corner, pre-fabricated housing, erected to ease the post war housing shortage. In the bottom right corner, Blenheim School is in view.

Above Blenheim School is St Marks Road. You can clearly see 3 gable ends of houses. The middle one is a shop called the Kandy Kabin which my parents owned. I think the next one is Glovers factory. At the top end of the block my grandmother lived and she looked across at Brooke Bond tea offices.

Blenheim Infants School was my first school. I went there at age 4. I remember the infants went in to the classroom up a couple of steps and through a big green door which swung out and was hooked to the wall. The children swarmed in after playtime and I used to be so scared of getting crushed. I decided to go out of the main gate and up the big steps to avoid this frightening ordeal. I was caught, of course, and never did it again. I guess the grownups had not heard of lining up! We lived at #7 Stratton Street. Does anyone remember it? It was opposite the blind school. If anyone could email me photos of Stratton Street, I would be most grateful. Does anyone remember Miss Petty's sweetshop? Any pictures? Thankyou. Deb Fryer Deb Fryer

I wonder if this Blenheim School the same one that I went to in the 40's? I was born in 1943 and was 4 years old when I went there. We used to have metal seesaw rockers in the playground and in the afternoons or lunchtimes they used to put trestle beds out in the playground and we slept outside for an hour. I remember that kids with nits had to have all their hair shaved and were painted with Permanganese of Potash so they had blue heads - poor things. I cut off a girl's long plait in class one day - sawed through it with those little blunt round ended scissors. I lied through my teeth right up to the moment my Mum marched me through the main gates and right up the steps before I confessed. I have always wished I could say sorry to that girl.

In response to Kate Atkinson comment re St Mark's Church - you can just see the trees which lined the churchyard and just seethe corner of the church building. It is at the bottom of St Marks Street and on St Marks Road which eventually ends up at the top of Blenheim School. At the junction of St Mark's Street and Woodhouse Lane is the "Eldon" pub, where my father Tom Martin, was Licensee from 1957 to 1969 where, probably, most Woodhouse folk at some stage had a drink!! It was the last pub in the North with a "Men Only" room (the Snug). One of the regulars was Dr Wilson, who taught Latin at nearby Leeds Grammar School. He would have his lunch and tea at the Eldon, sat in the Snug, which inspired him to pen a sign above the entrance in latin - "Hic praeclari modo intrant" which apparently meant "only the great are within here". Obviously when asked by lady customers what the meaning was, my father would answer " absolutely no idea"!! Love to hear from anyone who has memories of the time. I will dig out some photographs of the Eldon Childrens Trip to Bridlington where over 100 chldren and parents would set of in great spirits in 6 coaches to the coast! Great Days!

I went to Blenheim Infants from Sept 1955 to June 1959 and have to some tremendous memories from that area. I used to live at 38 Blackman Lane, this was in a row of terrace house with the dairy at one end and the doctors surgery at the other. I still go down to that area to relive old memories because it was such a fantastic area to grow up in. I can remember one day in the play ground when a pupil jumped onto the wall with a green metal facade with bolts pertruding through to hold the metal facade together and did an awful lot of damge to his face. The Health and Safety Brigade would have had a fit, but the kid brushed it off, which drills into me that we were not expected to moan after what our parents fought for in the second world war. Blenheim was a great place to live and All Souls was a great church too. All the best to those people who greww up in that area and take care. xxx

I did all my schooling at Blenheim from 1941 to 1951, Mr Mawson was headmaster before Mr Dean arrived. Other masters & mistresses names were Miss Kelly, Miss Battie, Mr.Gamble, Dunn, Cooper, Best, Pop Pearson, Ellison (old Mirk), Smith, & Fenwick. In the infants was also a Miss Yule. I remember 1951 was a good year for the school under Mr Dean, we put on a school play, a gymnastic display, all to do with the Festiavl of Britain, we also did very well in Rugby that year I proudly took part in all three events & won my school colours presented by Arthur Clues with photo in the News & Post papers.

Just below the pre-fabs in the top right corner is Notre Dame Convent and Girls Grammar School, which is located in St. Marks Avenue. After being made redundant in the 1970s, I went to work at the convent as a gardener, driver and also carrying out general maintainance work. This was to have been a 'stop gap' job but I spent two very happy years there. The St. Marks Church mentioned in other comments, is just off the picture to the right in St Marks Road. This church was the one used in the T.V. series The Beiderbecke Afair. A dodgy businessman played by (I think) Terence Rigby kept his contraband in the church cellar. In the bottom left corner runs what was University Road which has now been blocked off and pedestrianised, at one time it ran from Woodhouse Lane through to Clarendon Road.

I was at Blenheim infants & juniors from 1947 to 1952, after which I went to Lawnswood High School. Mrs Dunderdale, a lovely, gentle person, was my infant teacher. She used to play her beautiful musical box for our Friday afternoon treat. Anyone remember Mrs Cohen, who was a fierce but a terrific teacher? My year's scholarship class had about 60 pupils. When the heating was off, which was often, Mrs Cohen made us stand in the aisles and jump up and down. Every half hour as I remember. The only pupils I can remember by name are Pauline Wilson and William Chiddelow.

Just flipping through sites found this one and want more of this.Brought many memories back especially Blenheim School. In shot is the Girls School where we used to go for Lunch in that great hall, we also used the swimming pool and House maintenance facilities.Just in shopt is the Infans school where I attended until I was sent to Quarry Mount Woodhouse and then to Blenheim Boys which is out of shot, Pity!.I lived just over the road in Blandford Gardens Just out of shot. I had a Part time Job in Candy Cabin and was well paid by the owners, even at my age, they trusted me on many occasions and would leave me in charge, bet you wouldnt get tht these days, I think I may have been 13 years old.I remember some of the tutors in Blenheim Boys, they were:- Mr Bramwell,Maths. Mr Lister, Careers History, and last but not least "Pudding" cant remember his real name.I didnt get many qualification but ended up with an offer of apprenticeship with Vicars Crabtree Engineering and everyone couldnt believe it. Brings back great memories, especially playing cricket in the cemetary, climbing up the clock tower in the university, getting through the windows of the Girls swimming pool on a Sunday and having a swim, climbing up into the church tower and establishing a "Den"and in shot the old Brook Bond wharehouse where we used to ask for Brook Bond Cigarette cards. In shot opposite the Uiversity Tower were a number of shops, one of which was a Chemical Shop where we wouls by all sorts of wonderful chemicals to make weird and wonderful bombs that used to smell alot.Oh what days!!
